damage has been done

(Words and Music by James Parry)

She wore a sailor’s smile
Until she reached that point
Where she saw herself like dots she couldn’t join
While I was off on a trip
I didn’t know it yet
But with each day, I’d start to feel the same
We had a burden to share
Even way back then
As sailing friends when Captain signed us off

I know she favours the dark
When conversations start
Of which secretly and silently she’s a part
We put on music instead
Then fall asleep on my bed
With no fear or doubt whispering ‘round our heads
But this is odd for the lives
We’ve led in recent times
A year for which you don’t sign up

But still I spoil it
Then guilt comes on like violence
Constantly a siren
Ringing my ears
We walked our own paths
But shared some weight together
It hurts me just to tell ya
The damage has been done

It took over a year
For dust to finally clear
I pause for breath and find myself right here
We’ve had our golden age
So we shan’t complain
No dynasty can ever conquer time
We both found a friend
When everything caved in
Though different lives, these things we felt the same

As we took to Melbourne
And music was our saviour
Smoked down by the Yarra
And drank on summer streets
But then sometimes
We’d push too close together
And I can’t help but wonder
If damage has been done
She soothed me
When life was like a migraine
When loss was like a siren
Ringing in my ears
We walked our own paths
But shared some weight together
It hurts me just to tell ya
The damage has been done

yeah...the damage has been done, bak kata teman-ku 'takde siapa menang dan kalah. Semua kalah. Semua hati sudah parah...'
